Fall Into Shape with the New 100 Mile Run!
By: Elise Mullin
It won’t be difficult to lose a few pounds, get a kick in your fitness, or just pick up a new hobby if you pledge to the 100 Mile Run this Fall. Coach Stitzel, head of the men’s basketball team, is starting the program in order to encourage everyone to participate in an athletic activity. “When I was a kid, you were outside playing ball in your free time. Today, it’s video games,” he explains. Coach Stitzel is correct – a recent poll from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that nation-wide obesity is up 1.1% since 2007.
The program is a pledge to promote fitness and is meant to encourage people to make realistic goals. Everyone is given the choice of running on a treadmill at the gym, running around the school’s track, or running throughout the campus. The program is described as a “pledge” because you must sign up with Coach Stitzel and then check in with him each time you’ve contributed to your 100 miles. The pledge is open to all DVC students, faculty, and staff. It is ongoing throughout the school year, but Coach Stitzel encourages those interested to sign up with him as soon as possible. “Right now (Wednesday, September 8, 2010), we have about 8 people signed up,” he tells me. “This is a great chance to make a goal and stick with it.”
To find out more about the pledge, or to sign up, you can email Coach Stitzel at casey.stitzel@delval.edu, or just stop in his office, located in the gymnasium.
